Kenya is much more than just its dramatic scenery and plentiful wildlife, its people are the beating heart of the country. From the desert to the coast, you will be greeted by an open face and a beaming smile. Kenya’s people are famous for their warm welcome and everywhere you go you will be greeted with a Jambo “hello” or a Karibu “Welcome”.
It is an integral part of our safari to show you Kenya’s people as they live hand in hand for the most part with the wildlife. The local people have to see the benefit of tourism to enable wildlife not to be poached and land turned to agriculture.
The most famous of Kenya’s people are the Maasai. They inhabit large tracts of land from the Maasai Mara, through to Amboseli. Dependant on their cattle, they are now seeing the benefits of tourism. They are perhaps Kenya’s greatest conservationists having lived side by side wildlife for many years without depleting the animal numbers.
The majority of the central highlands are made up of the Kikuyu people who came to outside fame with the struggle for independence “the Mau Mau”. Wherever we go in East Africa, we will always stop and learn a little about the tribes in the area, from the tiny population of El Molo living on the shores of Lake Turkana to the Nomadic Samburu people, who are closely related to the Maasai. Their colours, energy, traditions, and way of living will delight and fascinate all who care to find out about these amazing people. |
