Don’t Forget

Don’t Forget

Here’s some advice about the preparations you need to make and a list of the essential kit you should pack for your safari:

Visas

Most European and US citizens traveling to Kenya need a visa. You can apply for this through your nearest Kenyan Embassy; get organised a month or so in advance. Alternatively, you can get your visa on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s immigration desk. You’ll need to complete a form and pay the fee in cash (currently $50).

Attire

You need to pack for the chilly highlands, the hot and humid coastal climate, the heat and dust of the dry plains, the cool evenings and brisk mornings. The best safari wardrobe is small and versatile. And if you really want to look on trend in your photographs – go for muted colours; white, khaki, tan, olive green. Don’t over-pack as baggage is restricted to 20kgs in light aircraft. You’ll need a soft duffle-bag to cram into the hold for expeditions, but your suitcase with its extras can be stored safely with us until you return from the wilds.

In your duffle bag:

  • Light cottons and linens for layering – avoid synthetic fabrics (with the exception of your shiny swimming costume)
  • Cashmere or wool scarves and jumpers
  • A wide brimmed hat and sun-glasses for sun protection (and style)
  • Long sleeves for the evenings (when the flies come biting out, they nibble wrists and ankles)
  • Flip -flops (for showering) and light walking boots or trainers with good socks

Accoutrements

  • Sun protection – those vertical UV rays are powerful, don’t underestimate the enhanced effect of equatorial altitude
  • Insect repellent
  • Head torch – for negotiating the shady parts of camp that the paraffin laterns don’t illuminate
  • Binoculars – we recommend you invest in a magnification of at least 8 x 40 or 10 x 40
  • Camera – go for the best possible optical zoom, the equivalent of a 300mm telephoto or more, and a high shooting speed; obviously you’ll need spare batteries and/or a charger.
